Winter riding

It's been a dry start to the winter down in Dunedin so the bike tracks with good drainage are still providing good riding. However, the perma-mud has set in on some trails and will likely spread over the next month or so.

My current rear tire is a Geax Aka 2.2 which is extrememly poor in the mud/wet. Anyone got any tips on an effective rear tire that will enjoy the mud, stick well to moist roots during climbs, and stay put on the corners.

I have a Maxxis Minion which is pretty decent in mud and has soft rubber so sticks to roots and rocks.

I also have a WTB Velocoraptor which is about the cheapest tire you can buy hard rubber doesn't stick to roots or rocks but has big knobs so is fine in mud.

Cheers. Yeah, I had the

Cheers. Yeah, I had the Maxxis Advantage recommended to me and that seems a similar tire to the Minion. I've got a Geax Gato on the front and would consider placing one on the back too.

I'm happy to spend a bit on a decent rear tire, any help I can get. I rode Nichols Creek yesterday. It's been raining a fair bit through the week so the climb was always going to be a traction event, my climbing technique is still a 'work-on' but the back wheel didn't help.

I was starting to think that going back down was going to be painful but it was a good descent in the end with the only limit being my legs getting a bit jelly-like towards the end.

Climbing is where I'm really noticing the back wheel so I'll aim for something that likes that job.

Got a new tire with big nobs

Got a new tire with big nobs and soft compound on the bike. What a difference, the Aka is worse than I thought. In the mud it's completely useless. I'll chuck it back on for summertime riding in Wanaka (what it's designed for).

There were loads of places that I previously had to attack hard to have enough mometum to make it up I but today I could cruse up through the soaked clay.
