Winter riding

It's been a dry start to the winter down in Dunedin so the bike tracks with good drainage are still providing good riding. However, the perma-mud has set in on some trails and will likely spread over the next month or so.

My current rear tire is a Geax Aka 2.2 which is extrememly poor in the mud/wet. Anyone got any tips on an effective rear tire that will enjoy the mud, stick well to moist roots during climbs, and stay put on the corners.

Cycling in Dunedin is dangerous

Dunedin police say they know the two women who allegedly abused and assaulted a pair of cyclists over the weekend. New Zealand representative cyclist Shane Melrose, 30, and Logan Edgar, 19 were riding two-abreast on Loan Metal Rd towards Outram, 11km northwest of Mosgiel, on Saturday when a car forced them off the road. The driver sounded the horn and the passenger shouted abuse out the window before the vehicle stopped suddenly, forcing Mr Melrose into gravel on the wrong side of the road. "It came up pretty quickly and tried to collect us with the front door," Mr Edgar told The Otago Daily Times.  He was caught behind the open car door when a woman got out and began slapping and punching him, he said. She also threw a bottle at him."The woman was going nuts. They dragged my bike into the front passenger seat and took off," he said. "It's stranger than fiction." Mr Edgar said he was frustrated by the attack and theft of his $12,000 bike and hit the car, breaking his hand. Police yesterday found his undamaged bike in a ditch.Dunedin Senior Sergeant Bruce Ross today said he knew who the women were and they would be spoken to shortly.

Hockney on the iphone

David Hockney has turfed his pocket sketchbook as he now has an iphone.

I quite like this quote; "People from the village...come up to me and tease me, 'We hear you've started drawing on your telephone.' And I tell them, 'Well, no, actually, it's just that occasionally I speak on my sketch pad.'"

Too Beefy?

The beef and lamb maidens have been joined by another girl. Over the last four years the Beef and Lamb board had an advertising campaign utilising the gold medal winning Evers-Swindel twins and Sarah Ulmer. Apparently their gratuitous meat consumption helped them to win Olympic gold medals. It was a simple premise but as the advertising campaign was getting stale they obviously wanted a new face. For this they required another young and female Olympic gold medallist.

Lastfm goes country-ist

I was a bit late on the uptake but the radio service on Lastfm is now free in the USA, UK and Germany but 3euro/month for everyone else.
