A few attempts have been made
A few attempts have been made at this idea in NZ but this seems to be the first where you aren't paying a major premium. We'll keep our car but it's nice that it's an option, for hardcore urbanites.

http://mobility.ch (select English) they have a flash Flash video (see "how it works") that says it all, or you read my rant instead. All I can say is that mobility rocks!! It's much cheaper than owning a car (although we use it very infrequently).
Sometimes however it can be difficult finding a cheap (smaller) car nearby, so we may have to walk 5 to 10 minutes. But there is almost always a car to suit our needs somewhere. The closest station is just 200m from our door and the next 3 stations are just 5 minutes walk.
We in comparison to Cityhop we pay about $NZ0.60/km and $NZ3.50/hour for a station wagon. Cost is about $NZ300.00/year. There are around 2000 cars and around 1200 stations throughout Switzerland. It may not sound cheap, but the price of owning a car in Switzerland is very high, you need to pay a minimum of about $100/month for your own car park, and thats outside your house, in town it get astromical.
