Yes, so the blog is back after a short hiatus. The reasons were initially the loss of my previous generous hosting arrangement followed by a bout of extreme laziness. I finally got round to the first step of getting things going again which was getting my UDAI and zone file. Hosting is now being supplied by Mr Smith of dollyfish.net.nz. The plan is now to import the old posts, get a decent theme and other tweeks, then rebuild the old box probably with vserver support, put it somewhere suitable, install zaapt on it and migrate to it at my leisure. How quickly these plans are executed is anyone's guess. Something I have been meaning to do for ages is setup this domain with google apps which was also waiting for me to get round to getting my zone file edited. I set this up over the weekend and can heartily recommend the service (at least until google (inevitably) turns evil). Its all pretty standard google services but I can access these via my own domain eg: http://docs.localhost/wordpress and http://sites.localhost/wordpress. There is some customisability, like having my own logo and you can alias multiple domains. All in all nice and simple and a lot less work than maintaining my own MTA, webmail and whatnot like I used to. The one downside is you cannot sign up to google apps with an existing account, so you cannot point google app accounts at regular gmail accounts so obviously setting up an account takes a bit of time if you have to migrate things like contacts and mailing list subscriptions from an existing gmail account. I needed to do this anyway as my idea of using 3 gmail accounts was getting out of hand. This was a great opportunity to consolidate to one account. I have plenty of alias addresses so just about any *@localhost/wordpress address you can think of for me will work.
